Last spring break we took our four girls to Hawaii... one last big family vacation before my oldest heads off to college. One noticeable thing about Hawaii is how many ladies had flowers in their hair. They are everywhere! They are so prevalent that they have these fun foam ones for sale everywhere you turn... they are very realistic looking too. I instantly thought about how great it would be to make some hair combs featuring my own felt flowers that I created with Papertrey Ink's Bloom Builder Dies. I've thought of a cute way to package them too! (You'll see that at the end of the post.)
So grab a cup of something... or if you are like me, a Diet Coke, and sit for a while... this is a little bit of a long post because of all of the photos. :)
Here are the flowers I created this time around...
A few of the supplies you will need to get started out with for creating the flowers.
Felt, Bloom Builders Dies, Button Twine and hair combs. (I got the hair combs at Michael's.)
Step 1) Die cut the felt. I used Hibiscus Burst and Raspberry Fizz. I like the two toned look and even the mix-matched look that is so in right now.
Step 2) Thread the smallest die cut as shown. I doubled up the tread... but it's actually not necessary to do that. The others I made use a single tread.
Step 3) Here is an important step... the ends of the twine need to be threaded through the ends of the die cut as shown here.

Step 4) Cinch the blossom together and double knot it. Set it aside.

Step 5) Repeat steps 2 and 3 with the larger bloom to prep for the next step.
Step 6) Tread the small bloom through the center of the large bloom
Step 7) Cinch the larger flower around the smaller one. I found that with the remainder of the flowers I created, that if I tried to overlap the creases of the petals they laid better on the combs.

Step 8) Wrap the twine around the comb in alternating directions then back again.

Step 9) Tie the twine in a knot then use glue (I used a hot glue gun.) to secure.
Here are the four Felt Hair combs that I came up with again. Can you guess who they are for?
Well, I have four daughters that these will go to first. Then I will make some more for a few friends! I really tried to customize them to their tastes and their ages.
Here's Ella's... she's 8 so I wanted a cute element to it. Hibiscus Burst and Raspberry Fizz felt, Spring Moss button.

Pepper is 12 and headed into middle school next year. This one is still a little playful and she requested Orange Zest and Harvest Gold. The button is from my Lemon tart stash.

Hannah is 16 and loves blue. I am giggling a little because she hasn't seen this yet... she's off at a week long youth trip to EFY. I know she will love the white and blueberry Sky combo!

Alex is my graduate and is ready for more mature looking accessories. She chose her felt colors (Ocean tides and Simply Chartreuse) and I added the Dark Chocolate button centers with the Zva pearl centers...colors I thought best reflected her. She loves this! I was happy to hear her talk about wearing it soon.
Here is a cute way to package them too!
First, punch two holes that ar slightly wider than the comb...

cut a slit between them to place the comb on to keep it in place.
Next, create a lining for the bottom of the tin.

Use score tape to adhere it.
Adhere the punched/slit layer to the tin with foam squares that have been doubled. (Piggy backed)

Slip in the Flower Comb after everything is all decorated.

I used Mehndi Medallion to stamp the Kraft cardstock... then I die cut a frame and stamped it with Birthday Basics. This is ready to give away to a friend now... after I make another flower comb.

Here is the finished tin. A simple bow decorates the outside. No need to do much more than that.

I hope you've enjoyed this post. I love creating these for my girls and plan on creating many more for friends and upcoming birthday gifts for my girls to give. What colors do you think you would wear? I'd love to hear your thoughts on that!
