I love Caramels... more than chocolate I think... there is just something so warm and yummy about them. My good friend, Tari, makes the best caramels... I was lucky enough to get the recipe from her a while back and love making them myself now. It's been nice to have since we've moved... like I took a little bit of her with me. :) I thought I would make some to show as a Valentines treat.... but this can also be something you can make as a "just because" gift!
First.... start with these basic ingredients... (plus butter and margarine)
- 1 Cube/stick (or 1/2 cup) Butter
- 1 Cube/stick (or 1/2 cup) Margarine
- 1 lb Brown Sugar
- 1 cup light Corn Syrup
- 1 14 oz can of sweetened condensed milk
Combine in sauce pan and bring to boil over medium heat. Boil until the temperature reaches 240 degrees on the candy thermometer then pour into a buttered 9"x13" pan. (I used a small costco cookie sheet with mine) Allow time to cool prior to cutting.
I thought I would try stamping on wax paper to make custom wrappers for these treats...
I randomly stamped several images to create the pattern. (a little hint is to stamp off the ink once before taking the stamp to the paper.. it's less slick that way!)
I thought I would stamp my little glassine bag too while I had my supplies out. (you can make these while the caramels cool too... since these need a little time to allow the StazOn to dry.)
Here are some all wrapped up!
in person the images on the wrapper show up much better.
Here are a few examples of how you could packages these for Valentines day!
lOvE songs and Heart Prints are just the perfect Valentines sets.. both are extremely versatile! I love reds and pinks together and the combination of Papertrey Ink's Pure Poppy and Raspberry Fizz are no exception in my book! (I also cut out a musical note with my cuttlebug, added some Crystal Effects and glitter for a little shine. The lips images are stamped with both colors then trimmed... Crystal Effect add that "lipstick" shine to them too!)
I can imagine making these with any holiday theme... any occasion really just by switching out the stamp set! (These would be great wedding favors too!)
So, have you made any home made candy lately? How did you package it?
Hope everyone is enjoying the Holidays... :)
